Solving the 3D container ship loading planning problem by representation by rules and meta-heuristics

چکیده
This paper formulates the 3D containership loading planning problem (3D CLPP) and also proposes a new and compact representation to efficiently solve it. The key objective of stowage planning is to minimise the number of container movements and also the ship’s instability. The binary formulation of this problem is properly described and an alternative formulation called Representation by Rules is proposed. This new representation is combined with three metaheuristics – genetic algorithm, simulated annealing, and beam search – to solve the 3D CLPP in a manner that Solving the 3D container ship loading planning problem 229 ensures that every solution analysed in the optimisation process is compact and feasible.

Solving the 3D Container Ship Loading Planning Problem by Representation by Rules and Beam Search
This paper formulates the 3D Container ship Loading Planning Problem (3D CLPP) and also proposes a new and compact representation to efficiently solve it. Containers on board a Container ship are placed in vertical stacks, located in different sections. The only way to access the containers is through the top of the stack. In order to unload a container at a given port j, it is necessary to rem...
متن کاملLeiden Computer Science Combinatorial Optimization for 3 D Container Loading Problem
Two characteristic, in NP-hardness and in widely practical application, of the 3D bin packing problem continue to attract the attention of academia and industry. For academia, they are always interested in solving the NP problem. For the industry, the 3-Dimensional bin packing problem is a problem faced in modern industrial processes such as container ship loading, pallet loading, plane cargo m...
متن کاملOptimising Machine Usage for Container Transfers at Multi- Modal Container Terminals
In a container terminal, containers unloaded from a ship are moved to the yard during the import operation. The export operation is the reverse of the import process. When a ship is served by multiple shore-cranes having both loading and unloading activities at the same time, a yard-machine can process an import container and an export container in one single round-trip. This paper investigates...
متن کاملA Genetic Algorithm with a Compact Solution Encoding for the Container Ship Stowage Problem
The purpose of this study is to develop an efficient heuristic for solving the stowage problem. Containers on board a container ship are stacked one on top of the other in columns, and can only be unloaded from the top of the column. A key objective of stowage planning is to minimize the number of container movements. A genetic algorithm technique is used for solving the problem. A compact and ...
